Tartar (Calculus) Removal

Tartar is a hard deposit that forms from soft dental plaque if not removed in time. It consists of bacteria, food particles, and minerals from saliva that harden over time. Tartar is not just an aesthetic issue – it can lead to more serious problems such as gum inflammation (gingivitis), periodontitis, and even tooth loss.

Why is tartar removal important?

Regular professional tartar cleaning:

  • prevents gum inflammation and periodontal disease,

  • reduces the risk of tooth decay,

  • improves bad breath,

  • contributes to a brighter smile and a fresher feeling in the mouth.

How does the procedure work?

Tartar is removed using an ultrasonic device that gently vibrates and breaks up the hard deposits without damaging the tooth enamel. This is followed by tooth polishing to remove any remaining residue and to smooth the tooth surfaces, which makes it harder for new tartar to form.

How often is cleaning recommended?

For most patients, we recommend professional tartar removal once or twice a year. If you have more serious gum issues or tartar builds up quickly, more frequent cleanings may be necessary – as advised by your dentist.

Maintaining oral hygiene at home

After professional cleaning, consistent oral hygiene at home remains crucial – brushing teeth twice a day, using dental floss or interdental brushes regularly.

After tartar removal, we can also perform air polishing. This method removes surface stains and remaining deposits, particularly those caused by drinking coffee, smoking, tea, or consuming natural food and drink colorants.

We understand that prevention is key – it’s the best way to maintain oral health and a beautiful smile.
